Overview of ECUT-IAEA Program
The program is a high degree academic education program jointly organized by East China University of Technology (ECUT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in a cost-sharing manner.
The program is meant to meet the needs of the member states of the IAEA to educate professionals in the fields of nuclear technology application, uranium mining and metallurgy, nuclear safety, radiation protection, and nuclear waste disposal. For master's or doctoral degree candidates, combined with the traditional strengthsculture including uranium metallogenic theory and metallogenic prediction models, nuclear resource exploration methods and technologies, uranium mining environmental standards, nuclear waste treatment and geological disposal methods, etc. The goal of the project is to cultivate the future managers, leaders and decision-makers in the nuclear energy sector.
Through the recommendation of the IAEA, the ECUT recruits 5-10 candidates every year who work in nuclear energy or related fields, show interest in studying scientific uranium mining and metallurgy technology, nuclear safety and radiation protection technology and aim at maintaining global security and promoting the establishment of a Community of Shared Future for Mankind.
Brief Introduction to ECUT
The ECUT is a comprehensive university jointly established by the Jiangxi Government and the China Atomic Energy Association (CAEA), the Ministry of Natural Resource (MNR), and the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). It focuses on science and technology education, while also covering disciplines such as economics, management, humanities, law, education, and arts. Disciplines such as Chemistry, Engineering, and Earth Science at the ECUT are ranked in the top 1% globally according to the ESI (Essential Science Indicators) ranking. The ECUT has established more than 30 high-level scientific research platforms, including national key laboratories, international joint research centers, and the Reference Laboratory of the IAEA. It undertakes international scientific and technological cooperation projects, international conferences, and talent development tasks. It has conducted teacher training and exchange student programs with universities and research institutes in the United States, Germany, Ireland, Australia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and other countries. Every year the ECUT - IAEA admits 5-10 outstanding applicants with excellent academic performance and a global vision in Nuclear Science, Earth Science and related fields, who are eager to pursue advanced studies in China and contribute to international academic cooperation and interdisciplinary exchanges across the globe.
ECUT is home to over 300 students drawn from more than 40 countries. ECUT offers a friendly and welcoming community where students can get involved in their favorite activities and try new ones. Students can choose from associations of the university and activities, such as sports competition, New Year's Party, tourist visits to Chinese cultural and historic sites, etc. Students are encouraged to participate in various extracurricular activities, so that they can achieve a well-rounded development.
Brief Introduction to IAEA
The IAEA is the world’s central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. As the UN family’s specialized organization for "Atoms for Peace and Development", it advances the safe, secure and peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, and contributes to international peace and security as well as the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The objectives of the IAEA’s dual mission – promoting and overseeing the peaceful use of atomic energy – are set out in Article II of its Statute. The Agency strives to accelerate and expand atomic energy’s contribution to global peace, health and prosperity, and to the best of its ability, ensures that any assistance it provides, or that is given at its request or under its supervision and control, is not used for military purposes.
Boasting 180 Member States, the IAEA is governed by the Board of Governors and the General Conference. Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, it has two regional offices in Toronto, Canada and Tokyo, Japan, plus two liaison offices in New York, the United States and Geneva, Switzerland. The Agency also operates nuclear technology-specialized laboratories in Vienna and Seibersdorf (Austria), as well as in Monaco.

VII. Application for ECUT - IAEA Program
Eligibility
·The applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens.
·The scholarships are only available to the qualified applicants recommended by the IAEA.
·The applicants should have the knowledge of Mathematics and Physics, and excellent ability in scientific research.
·The applicants should have good English-proficiency in writing, reading and communication.
·Educational background requirement:
-The applicants for master's degree program should hold a bachelor's degree;
-The applicants for doctoral degree program should hold a master's degree.
Application Time
From January 15, 2026, to April 15, 2026.
Application Documents & Submission Guidelines
Applicants must complete and provide all application documents truthfully and accurately. Any falsification or misrepresentation of information will result in automatic disqualification.
Applicants are required to submit their applications and materials through the Online Application System, and simultaneously send a copy of all application documents to lzhou@ecut.edu.cn.

The required application materials are as follows:
(1) Official diploma of the highest academic qualification (bachelor’s/master’s degree, notarized photocopy);
(2) Academic transcripts (notarized photocopies in English or Chinese). Applicants for doctoral programs must submit transcripts of both bachelor’s and master’s studies;
(3) Study/Research Plan (detailing academic objectives, research interests, and proposed study/research roadmap);
(4) Scanned copy of the passport information page (valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended start date of the program);
(5) Photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and copies of blood test reports (issued by authorized medical institutions within the last 6 months);
(6) Two recommendation letters. These must be written by professors or associate professors, provided in English or Chinese, and include the recommenders’ original signatures and contact information;
(7) English proficiency certificate. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency, with a minimum score of 75 on the TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) or 5.5 on the IELTS Academic. Alternatively, an official English proficiency certificate of equivalent level issued by the applicant’s home university is acceptable;
(8) Non-criminal record certificate (notarized photocopy in English or Chinese, issued within the last 6 months).
Follow-up Process
East China University of Technology (ECUT) will verify the applicants’ admission eligibility, application materials, and professional competence. The list of pre-qualified candidates will be submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will make the final decision on the funding recipients. The International School of ECUT will issue admission notices to successful candidates, complete relevant enrollment procedures, and mail the JW202 Form directly to the applicants.
Key Provisions & Responsibilities
-All application documents will not be returned, regardless of whether the application is accepted or rejected.
-Applications will be deemed invalid and will not be processed if the applicant’s qualifications or submitted documents fail to meet the specified requirements.
-If an applicant is unable to submit the required documents on time due to special circumstances, they must notify the International School of ECUT in a timely manner.
-ECUT reserves the right to suspend or revoke the scholarship if any inaccurate information or fraudulent documents are found in the application materials.
-Applicants who fail to complete registration before September 30th will be deemed to have voluntarily given up the scholarship.
Important Notes
-All notarized documents must be in English or Chinese; documents in other languages must be accompanied by official certified translations.
-Incomplete applications or failure to submit required materials by the deadline will not be considered.
-ECUT reserves the right to request additional supporting documents if necessary.
